Can Big Data Help Beat Diabetes? Dr. Alessandra Petrelli
We ask the question: can big data help in the fight against diabetes?
Did you know that obesity kills more people than starvation? Over 90% of Type 2 diabetes sufferers are obese.
In this episode of the AXA Research Files, science presenter Greg Foot rides with Brian Kamstra of the Novo Nordisk cycling team (a team made up purely of riders with Type 1 diabetes), to understand the kind of fitness data that cycling teams can collect from wearable devices.
Greg also meets and chats to AXA-supported researchers Alessandra Petrelli and Helen Colhoun, to find out if data collected from sources such as electronic healthcare registers and wearable devices can be the driving force for new treatments of diabetes.
We talked to Helen Colhoun, Medical Informatics Researcher, in more detail about her research. You can find that video HERE.
Cycling is one of the best forms of low-impact exercise, making it easier on your body to keep fit and prevent obesity. For more on why cycling is good for you, watch our video HERE.
