In less than 50 years, the planet will be home to nearly 10 billion inhabitants. How to sustainably feed such a growing population, in a context where the increase of extreme weather events brought by climate change is already a challenge for food yield? For Prof. Rod Wing, Researcher in genome biology and evolutionary genomics, the solution is rice. By harnessing the natural variation in rice’s wild relatives, he will be able to provide public breeders around the world with varieties of rice that are higher yielding, more nutritious, and that have less of an environmental footprint- thus playing a major role in making our planet more sustainable.
